The Role of the Arts Pastor

The Work of the People teamed up with author/filmmaker/professor Craig Detweiler on a series of short films called Do You See? The second video in the series asks “What is the role of the arts pastor?” and goes on from there. Watch please.

I love Craig and his passion for this kind of stuff, and I love that The Work of the People has a knack for asking questions that few others are asking and making films that few others are making. Check out “Do You See? (I)” here and “Do You See? (III)” here.

Speaking of Craig Detweiler and filmmaking, he just let me know about the Reel Spirituality Awards for short films created in/for a minstry context. If you created a short film in 2008, click here for entry forms and details.

I’m not feelin’ it. What’s with the random stutter cuts, meaningless colour-shifts, and odd cutaways (or not being able to spell ‘draw’)?

When rattling off their list of what art is, they missed writing. And it shows. This needed a script. When it gets on a roll, what it says is hackneyed, redundant, and actually sometimes untrue (when was the church ever a hotbed of dance or drama?).

For this to connect with me, it would have to practice what it’s preaching. Show me the art. Show me the craft. Show me the collaboration. Don’t rant about what’s been missing. Show me.
