Who Should We Spotlight Next?

| By Scott McClellan | Found in Communication | 7 Comments

Every issue of COLLIDE contains a feature called “Church Spotlight,” in which we — are you ready for this? — spotlight a church. We like talking to churches that are creative and excellent in their use of media and technology and sharing their insights with our readers. It’s not about elevating them to hero status or saying they have it all figured out; it’s about sharing what various local churches are doing and learning. Anyway, here’s where you come in.

We need you to tell us who we should spotlight next. In the comments below, tell us about a church that uses media and technology well. The more you can tell us (the church’s name, URL, and why you’re nominating them), the better equipped we’ll be to make decisions on upcoming Church Spotlights.

So, let’s hear it. Who should we spotlight next?

At the risk of seeming like a self-promoter.. My church, NewPointe Community Church could make a good spotlight. Our current "claim to fame" is that we launched our first two multi-sites last fall–ON THE SAME DAY. Don't know that I'd want to do it again…but it worked! We're also unique in that we're growing like crazy (about 3,500 each week now) in a relatively small community near Amish country in Ohio. Just a thought. By the way, love the church spotlight in each issue.

Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. http://www.elevationchurch.org. They are doing alot of cool things. They have 3 different campuses. Just started building their 4th location. I know at least 1, if not 2 of their current locations are high schools or another type of non-permanent building. Their Matthews location is their own building. They launched a live webcast a few months ago and are in the process of making it better and working everything out with it. And they are growing in leaps and bounds. This Easter they are having their service in the home of the Charlotte Bobcats NBA team.

I'd like to see a church using multimedia in creative, artistic ways but spending hardly any money.
I've seen it done…and it's usually very inspiring…and encouraging to other churches who have very little financial resources.

I would say that Fresh Life Church (http://www.freshlifechurch.org) in Kalispell, Montana does a whole lot with very little. They are a 3 year old church that meets in 2 ridiculously old movies theaters which are connected by fiber and act as satellites of each other using an uncompressed Full HD video signal. All services are streamed live via the website. They have a mid-week study called Skull Church (http://www.skullchurch.com) which is an evangelistic oriented service and is super saturated in fantastic creative media. They also have a radio station called Fresh Life Radio (http://www.freshliferadio.com) which broadcasts 24/7 over FM and has live streaming in super high quality audio (256k) on the net. "We play what we like, if anybody else is listening, that's an added bonus" is one of the spots. Creative media is a huge priority in the church. Absolutely everything they do, from videos to websites, is done in house. Fresh Life Creative is a semester based ministry that just started this week to serve as an opportunity for the church membership to sharpen skill sets and serve the congregation by attending classes for music, film, photography, design and technical arts. Coming up with innovative ways of doing the same old thing has lead to solutions like running sound through a Mac Pro and Apple's Logic Studio instead of dropping ridiculous amounts of cash on a super nice digital board. Levi, the pastor, has his pulpit retrofitted with a small LCD allowing the congregation to text message questions to him so that he can address those during his teaching (some of those are here – http://www.youtube.com/skullchurch). They are a super cool church. Check them out!

We work with a small church in Colorado called Red Rocks Church (see http://www.redrockschurch.com/). We designed their website but they create many of their own graphics and have a great staff that is passionate about reaching this generation.
