Summer Reading List

Now that our July/August issue has been put to bed, I finally have time to breathe again, as well as time to read. (By the way, if you want to receive the July/August issue, you’d better subscribe by the morning of Tuesday, June 24.) I’m almost done with a really interesting book, Jesus for President by Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw, so I’m looking for some suggestions. What’s on your summer reading list?

  • Colin

Vintage Jesus – Mark Driscoll/Gerry Breshears
    Christ & Culture – H. Richard Niebuhr
Why We’re Not Emergent (From Two Guys Who Should Be) – Kevin DeYoung & Ted Kluck
Preaching The Cross – Mark Dever, J. Ligon Duncan, R. Albert Mohler Jr., C. J. Mahaney, John MacArthur, John Piper, R. C. Sproul

    Good Evening Scott,
I know its time in the spotlight might have come and gone but I always suggest The Life of Pi as a must for summer reading to those who have not already ran across it. It is a wonderful story of survival with commentary of religion, metaphysics, human nature, quite simply the whole shebang. If there had to be one book for the summer you cant find a more interesting, thought provoking, all around good read.
    Best of Luck,

Really getting into “The Tangible Kingdom” by Hugh Halter and Matt Smay. Practical stuff. I’ve also recently enjoyed “Jim and Casper go to Church” by Jim Henderson and Matt Casper, “Static” by Ron Martoia, “Quaker Summer” by Lisa Samson (ficion).

The God Who is There, Francis Schaeffer
    Culture Shift, Albert Mohler
    Everyday Theology, Kevin Vanhoozer
The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis

Ditto on Jim & Casper Go To Church

I’m reading it now and it’s interesting. A long-time Christian and minister goes to Evangelical churches with an atheist, and they compare notes on what it’s like to be a first-time guest. Every church leader should read it.

Jesus of Suburbia by Mike Erre. Very thought provoking.

Not new by any means, but both are great reads any time:
Starving Jesus, Craig Gross and JR Mahon
    The Ragamuffin Gospel, Brennan Manning

    I’m Reading:
The New Christians by Tony Jones
    Soul Graffiti by Mark Scandrette
A Christianity Worth Believing by Doug Pagitt
    and
What it Takes by Richard Ben Cramer (non-theological, but excellent reporting on the 1988 presidential election)

    Ten Cans by Dale Henry
The Proverbial Cracker Jack by Dale Henry
    Radical Prayer by Derek Morris
