Crack & Christianity Today

A few months ago, I was interviewed by Sarah Pulliam from Christianity Today for a story about Northland, A Church Distributed and church technology. Guess what? The article is now online here.

In what will invariably go down as a proud moment for me, my family, and COLLIDE Magazine, I chose to use the word “crack” in the pages of Christianity Today:

“You hear a lot about how people are so addicted to their computers, so you hear church leaders say, ‘We have to bring church to their computers; our church has to be MTV on crack in order to reach them,’” says Scott McClellan, editor of Collide, a magazine for church leaders who use media and technology. “The Northland model seems to reflect a sense of connecting people to a community but not leaving them in a virtual scenario.”

The next time I’m quoted in a leading evangelical publication, it will have nothing to do with illegal narcotics. I promise. All kidding aside, check out the full article if you have a minute. In fact, while you’re there, check out this quote from Northland’s Joel Hunter:

“Planting churches in the Western mentality is tremendously expensive and has a high failure rate,” Hunter says. “Since we thought physical church plants would be an ineffective approach to church multiplication, we went with online resources that are much more efficient and less costly.”

No disrespect to Hunter, but the quote doesn’t sit well with me at all. But hey, at least he didn’t use the word “crack.”
